WAB FM: Unwound Ep.1

With this WAB FM Unwound interview, Kristina K. wanted to look behind the classic stereotype of a school administrator and show the real person underneath.

Her series and channel aims to capture the untold stories of the WAB and local community in the relaxed, WAB FM studio setting. Being both a well-liked and quiet leader, Mr. Abrahams, WAB's High School Vice Principal (and amateur Electronic Music producer), was an obvious first choice.

With the help of two student producers, this first episode was the media teams' initial attempt at interviewing in a DIY studio setting with basic equipment and editing software. Through a process of trial and error, overcoming some video and audio issues, and learning by doing, Kristina and the team produced the first publishable episode of their series.

Green is Gold: EV Rap Battle

“A transport revolution in our cities is under way. Ride-sharing schemes, driverless cars and electric vehicles look set to bring us all kinds of benefits, such as lower pollution, faster flowing traffic and fewer accidents.

But these benefits won’t just fall into our laps. What will we have to do to ensure that we reap the rewards of these changes and avoid potential pitfalls? Will technological change bring us closer together as a society or drive us further apart? Will we the consumers be the ones who make the all-important decisions, or will we be at the mercy of the tech and car companies and the policy-makers?”

This animated video and rap battle outlining the pros and cons of EVs help us to truly get this conversation started.

If You Were Gone

It's easy to be mean when you're hiding behind a screen. Concealed behind the safety net of a screen name. Not having to take responsibility for the things that happen on the other side of the screen. But just because you can't see the impact, doesn't mean it isn't real. People don't notice how much impact words have until it's too late.

Taking a Moment to Celebrate

Kenny, Katie and David capture a powerful juxtaposition in the energy of online chats. Their film asks us to take a moment to celebrate both successes and challenges -- essential framing in our complex world and online where polarization and rage runs high.

How can we recognize the strength we get from learning and embracing a sense of positivity in being creative problem solvers in a challenging world? How can we support others in similar notions in life, online, and in the future? How can we shift the online narrative to a more positive ecosystem?

Unfolding

In Candy’s Video for Change, she utilizes a sash and various tableaus to symbolize conceptions of gender inequality. Her ICFM op-doc calls us to consider the why of United Nations SDG 5:

“Gender bias is undermining our social fabric and devalues all of us. It is not just a human rights issue; it is a tremendous waste of the world’s human potential. By denying women equal rights, we deny half the population a chance to live life at its fullest. Political, economic and social equality for women will benefit all the world’s citizens. Together we can eradicate prejudice and work for equal rights and respect for all.”

Riddhi M: The Language of Movement

As we grow in awareness of issues tied to justice, I have rarely felt able personally do something beyond trying to bring deeper compassion into friendships and new situations. While this ground-level, personal action towards justice is critical, I now see a way to connect my artwork to both anti-discrimination themes and towards global collaboration.

My personal, artistic goal was to choreograph a five-minute dance piece, as an intercultural fusion of dance styles in order to show that all dance styles are beautiful and deserve respect, contributing to a message centered in equality and unity. Exploring and engaging with new cultures and art forms can help reduce xenophobia, and when put together, we can see how we share in the human experience.
