Critical Media Literacy for Holistic Global Citizenship

Eco-Media is a set of hybrid learning opportunities for students everywhere to explore and produce meaningful media for the critical and compassionate exchange of ideas.

The programs and publications blend the studies and application of deep ecology, social cohesion, civil discourse, well-being, and critical media literacy to engage students in unpacking a complex technological landscape while creating media for a healthier, happier, and more sustainable world.

Schools, educators and students can customize experiences with our Inspire Citizens’ team around launching Eco-Media programs, co-designing learning experiences, embedding humane media and technology literacies into practices and school communities, and empowering learners to design purposeful publications for local and global digital exhibitions and our own Inspire Citizens archives.

Note:

Certain publications might include topics that some learners may find complex or challenging. We ask educators and learners help to create an atmosphere of empathy, mutual respect and sensitivity when exploring critical, systemic topics of social, environmental, and economic significance found in a number of these media productions.

Taking a Moment to Celebrate

Kenny, Katie and David capture a powerful juxtaposition in the energy of online chats. Their film asks us to take a moment to celebrate both successes and challenges -- essential framing in our complex world and online where polarization and rage runs high.

How can we recognize the strength we get from learning and embracing a sense of positivity in being creative problem solvers in a challenging world? How can we support others in similar notions in life, online, and in the future? How can we shift the online narrative to a more positive ecosystem?

Unfolding

In Candy’s Video for Change, she utilizes a sash and various tableaus to symbolize conceptions of gender inequality. Her ICFM op-doc calls us to consider the why of United Nations SDG 5:

“Gender bias is undermining our social fabric and devalues all of us. It is not just a human rights issue; it is a tremendous waste of the world’s human potential. By denying women equal rights, we deny half the population a chance to live life at its fullest. Political, economic and social equality for women will benefit all the world’s citizens. Together we can eradicate prejudice and work for equal rights and respect for all.”
