Global Youth Media
Amplify Student Voice, Ethical Journalism & Relevant Storytelling in a Challenging World

OVERVIEW

Developed by Inspire Citizens co-founders, Steve Sostak and Aaron Moniz, Global Youth Media is both an international media hub and a media literacy approach that links with the Empathy to Impact project-cycle while also amplifying interdisciplinary standards. Global Youth Media launches students into thinking and acting as purposeful and ethical journalists in their local communities using elements of investigative journalism, compassionate storytelling, and design thinking.

Within a challenging attention economy and polarizing feed of news and information, educators face many societal and pedagogical challenges in teaching the responsible consumption and ethical production of applied media. Global Youth Media exists to help educators and students to thoughtfully engage with diverse information, promote civic discourse, and design media projects that illuminate a deep understanding of how intercultural competence and sustainable development are needed for the wellbeing of people and the planet.

Global Youth Media is a foundational pedagogical element of the ten-pathway Inspire Citizens Global Impact School model and self-study.

GOALS

Following hands-on work with core Global Youth Media tools, deep thinking practices, and the application of human-centered technology skills, we will have time to personalize designs of programmatic or curricular enhancements. Educators will leave the workshop inspired to amplify the power of media analysis, investigative journalism and compassionate storytelling into schools and classrooms.

Following the workshop, participants can opt into connecting directly with the Global Youth Media International Hub as a contributing member station dedicated to enhancing global and intercultural competence as well as critical thinking and problem-solving though ethical journalism.

POTENTIAL AUDIENCE

The interactive Global Youth Media workshop is designed for any educator that wishes for student learning and a school’s educational model to include thoughtful engagement with diverse information, the promotion of civic discourse, and the design of media projects for collective wellbeing and sustainable development.
