GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP STRANDS in practice
CITIZENS JOURNALISM
Students podcast always with the community radio, authentic literacy component in mind when making inquiry or literacy choices, revising work, and publishing with purpose. The radio station podcasts are organized around news, interviews, storytelling, and culture.
GLOBAL ISSUES COMPREHENSION
While facilitated, students are expected to find meaningful disciplinary literacy links to their community projects, leading to a richer experience with global issues and citizenship.
SYSTEMS THINKING
Understanding dynamic systems is a crucial component for students in finding leverage points for inquiry, research, and action. Whether examining causal loop diagrams for the climate crisis or in looking at a more sustainable circular economic model, students can enter into issues and solutions with richer focus and understanding.
MINI-CAS
Reflection and revision in a service project builds meaningfulness and mindfulness into the project and leads to greater success in future endeavors.
CITIZENS MAKERS
Students constantly consider the sustainability components of building while learning about DIY hands-on work: Running student-led workshops for community service, integrating reusable and up-cycled materials, building purposefully for others, crafting with senior citizens, and so on.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
The power of connecting one's service or project to the local community is evident in authenticity, meaning, responsibility, and engagement.
WORKSHOP TIME
1. Using any of the three models: CREATE a pathway or ONE MIni-MAP where YOU CAN integrate a strand of global citizenship when RETURNING TO SCHOOL THIS WEEk. https://www.gliffy.com/
2. IDENTIFY RESOURCES BELOW THAT you CAN IMMEDIATELY integrate into your teaching and learning.
3. Provide me some feedback: Occupymiddleschool@gmail.com

After examining narrative writing through reading "Global Perspectives" novels such as A Long Walk to Water, students branched out to find compelling Newsela articles centered on human rights and researched the related regional global issues. Meshing their understanding of narrative writing, geography, and global issues, students produced a range of storytelling through story pitches, written narratives, screenplays, and audio stories.
