Stories Hidden in Plain Sight
Out of the Blocks is a uniquely immersive listening experience that emerges from a mosaic of voices and soundscapes, first on the streets of Baltimore, and now into international student productions. A custom-tailored score colors and connects this tapestry of interviews that capture stories hidden in plain sight.
Let Inspire Citizens support the integration of the Out of the Blocks mission and the producers, Aaron Henkin and Wendel Patrick, into your school or classroom.
In collaboration with WYPR's Out of the Blocks podcast, fourteen grade 6-9 students from the International School of Beijing visited with a group of senior citizens from the block of high rises just north of the school. The visit resulted in rich conversations on happiness, wellness, family, change, and wisdom.
The idea for the Out of the Blocks Beijing media project originated from conversations between Steve Sostak and Aaron Henkin and was developed by four teacher facilitators on ISB's "One Day" -- a full school day dedicated to a variety of student-led, project-based learning opportunities.
This project explored themes embedded in the WYPR's Out of the Blocks, most notably the idea that everybody has a story, especially the stories hidden in plain sight.
